When engaging in active and contact sports, a mouthguard should be worn to protect the braces, teeth and gums from any possible trauma. As the teeth are moving during orthodontic treatment, normal mouthguards may not fit over your braces or can become ill-fitting very quickly.

If you require a mouthguard during your orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist can make a mouthguard for you to wear over your braces. This type of custom-made mouthguard is made using an impression of your teeth with the braces on. It therefore fits comfortably over the braces and allows for some movement of the teeth during the orthodontic treatment.

As the teeth move, you may require a second mouthguard. Your orthodontist can check the fit of your mouthguard and advise on the need for a further mouthguard as and when necessary.
